Mayanka is a social anthropologist specialising in questions of urban inequality, housing and energy vulnerability. She studies empty homes in Chelsea, comparing a luxury square full of second homes and a nearby council estate being emptied for regeneration. She also studies housing inequalities through the metric of heating and how domestic heating practices have been reshaped by the ongoing cost of living crisis. For her research, she makes use of methods such as collaborative drawing, storytelling and mapping with research participants. She is based at the LSE where she teaches anthropology and brings in various visual and material methods into her teaching practice. She also loves writing short stories about various places in London.
